LED sports lighting improves visibility and visual comfort while reducing energy costs by 75%

Vevey is a city committed to sustainable energy and has obtained the Swiss “Energy City” label. As part of this commitment, the local authorities recently renovated Stade de Copet and upgraded the sports lighting. Schréder coordinated this ambitious project in collaboration with several partners, including Emil Egger AG, Romande Energie Services SA, Valmont, and the Vevey Sports Team.

Sustainable sports lighting infrastructure

The sports lighting on the main football pitch was outdated, making maintenance a real burden. The concrete masts were structurally weak and some of the floodlights had already had to be removed. The objective was clear: to replace the ageing infrastructure with a modern, high-performance, sustainable LED solution that complies with current sporting standards.

A modern, more energy-efficient stadium

All of the old masts and floodlights were removed and replaced by four 31m high masts, each equipped with 8 BRITELINE LED floodlights. Thanks to their high performance, they provide excellent uniform lighting across the pitch while significantly reducing energy consumption.

The entire electrical installation, including the cabinets, connections and control panels, was also replaced to ensure the safety and reliability of the new system. The local authorities also took the opportunity to replace the pitch with the latest generation of synthetic turf.

A lighting upgrade not without challenges

The stadium’s location in the heart of a residential neighbourhood presented major logistical and technical challenges. Meticulous organisation was required for the assembly and delivery of the masts in single pieces. To minimise disruption to residents and maintain local traffic flow, the teams worked through the night to deliver and install the masts.

A winning lighting solution for all

The city’s investment has delivered a new LED lighting solution that:

  • provides optimal visibility for players, coaches and spectators alike, while meeting the requirements of sports federations;
  • delivers energy savings of up to 75% compared to the previous system;
  • minimises light pollution, preserving the starry sky and the comfort of local residents;
  • enables more teams to train and play on a modern, high-performance pitch, thereby enhancing the city's sporting appeal.

Sports lighting that meets real needs

The city required lighting levels suitable for a first division pitch (100x64 m). The certified results confirmed the efficiency of the new lighting by achieving the following:

To adapt the lighting levels to the players needs and comfort, and to maximise savings further, a control system dims the lighting based on activity:

  • 120 lux for matches;
  • 80 lux for training;
  • 50 lux for pitch maintenance.

A collaborative success

The project was supported by the ‘Fonds du sport vaudois’ Foundation and the Swiss Football Association's ‘LEDforFOOT’ programme.
